CLUB HISTORY
The Seaford Football Club was born in
late 1921, when formation meetings were held at Armstrong’s Grocery Store,
Martins Garage and Weatherley’s Milk Bar.
The aim of the Club was to
encourage and foster the youth of the area into playing Australian Rules
Football. A request was granted to field a tem in the Mornington Peninsula
Association’s 2nd Division for the 1922 Season
The original ground was at the end
of Robinsons Road and Admans Street, being known as “The Flat”. Bill Klauers’
plough was used to make a boundary line and saplings were cut from his nearby
farm as goalposts. Players changed behind a large boxthorn tree nearby.
Understandably the fledging team
failed to win a game in its opening year. Players were recruited from Richmond in 1923
hence the long association with our name, “The Tigers”.
Success was quick to come with
Premierships in 1924, 1926 and 1927.
The Council had transformed
McCullochs old sand-pit into a recreational ground for football and cricket and
hence the Club had a new home for the 1930 season. The ground dimensions of
150m x 100m have not changed since its inception in1930.
Despite the depression hitting
hard, the Club opened its new Sandstone Clubrooms in May of 1934. It capped the
season off by winning the premiership.
The Club was promoted to “A”
Division and struggled before the war when the competition was abandoned. After
the war the Club had its most successful decade competing in 8 Finals campaigns.
The Club won the 1951 “Golden” Flag
(100 years since Gold was discovered in Victoria), the 1954 (a Royal visit by
the New Queen), and 1956 (The Olympic Premiership).
The wheel turns with all clubs and
the next decade was a downhill trend, and by the early 60s the Club suffered
heavy defeats. Local identity, Alan Wicks, helped resurrect the Club to
runners-up in 1968 and again in 1969 before local champ, Graham Alderson steered
what most believe was the strongest side ever to win the 1970 Premiership.
The Club only made the First Semi
Final in 1974 and 1977.
The Seaford Junior Football Club
began to feed the Senior Club and again we participated in 8 Finals campaigns in
a decade with Premierships in 1981 and 1985 along with 2nds and 3rds flags also.
The 90’s were again a
roller-coaster-ride as the Club competed in the 1993 Preliminary Final and then
relegated at the end of 1996.
Now in the Peninsula Division of
the MPNFL, the Tigers have engaged in 3 Finals campaigns with runners-up on two
occasions, in 1998 and 2000.
The Club has come a long way in its
80 years considering it took 26 pounds to run the Club, build new rooms in1970
and add a 40 foot extension in 1981.
Over the years, the financial
backbone of the Club was hosting the Finals and in the 90’s, our own Night
Series – through very dedicated and hard-working individual who believed in the
culture of this great Football Club.
We have not been without our
successes with local players, gifted enough to play VFL/AFL:
