Melways Ref. 99 E5
The Smith Shield came about
due to the passing of Chris Smith,
Chris passed away on 1st of September 2006 at age 51 years to
Pancreatic Cancer.
The Shield was struck to commemorate Chris’s loyal support to
both Bonbeach and Seaford, Chris would often travel twice sometimes
three times between games depending on what games the boys were playing.
In Chris’s final year Jake transferred to Bonbeach to play
football with his two brothers Luke and Nic,
this was a wish Chris had always hoped for,
fittingly in Chris’s final year, as proud as punch he saw all three boys
play together.
Both Seaford and Bonbeach embraced and supported the three boys
to fulfil their fathers wish,
Chris passed away the day before Bonbeach Reserves played off in
a final, in which all three boys played,
I remember Nic was saying on the day, we are all hurting but to
play this final is what Dad would want.
In 2007 all three boys decided they would like to transfer to
Seaford
and finish their playing days at the other club Chris so dearly
loved, without hesitation
Bonbeach agreed and understood, and once again the two clubs
supported the move, it was from here that the Smith Shield came to be,
each time the two clubs play at Seaford they would play for the Smith
Shield, and any money raised on the day would be donated to the Cancer
Foundation.
